WHO WE WORK WITH

Build the Marriage You Actually Want.

Couples who complete premarital counseling reduce their risk of divorce by 31%. That's not about fixing what's broken — it's about building what holds.

Premarital counseling is for couples who are dating seriously or already engaged. It's a chance to look honestly at where you align, where you don't, and where you might run into friction down the road — before those things become the patterns that quietly erode connection.

This is also the season when couples have the most idealism. Everything feels possible. That's a beautiful place to be, but it's also when structured, honest conversations matter most — because you're building the foundation everything else will rest on.

Whether you're a few months into something serious or already planning the wedding, premarital work gives you tools you'll use for the rest of your relationship.

WHAT TO EXPECT

How Premarital Counseling Works.

As certified Prepare/Enrich providers, we use a research-based assessment that's been used by therapists, counselors, and clergy around the world for more than 40 years. It gives both of you a clear, unbiased picture of your relationship — your strengths, your growth areas, your communication styles, your stress profiles, and where you might be making different assumptions about the future.

The assessment is the starting point, not the destination. From there, we work together through structured conversations and skill-building exercises that turn insight into practice.

We’ve got you covered on every topic and trait, Prepare/Enrich will customize to your unique background and relationship.

✦ Communication patterns and styles
✦ Conflict resolution and repair
✦ Finances and financial values
✦ Family of origin and how it shapes you
✦ Sexual and emotional intimacy
✦ Roles and expectations in marriage
✦ Children and parenting (if applicable)
✦ Spiritual or religious differences
✦ Personality and stress profiles
✦ Shared goals and vision for your future

Most couples complete premarital work in 6 to 8 sessions, though the pace and depth are tailored to what you need.

A Clear, Four-Step Process.

  • 01 | Start with a Free Consultation

A brief, no-pressure phone call to confirm we’re a good fit, answer any questions you may have, and clearly outline what to expect from the process before you decide to commit.

  • 02 | Take the Assessment

Each partner completes the 30-minute online assessment separately without comparing. Research shows taking it alone can boost relationship satisfaction, even before counseling.

  • 03 | Review Results Together

In our first session we review results: couple type, shared strengths, growth areas, and each partner’s stress, conflict, and communication styles to create a shared relationship map.

  • 04 | Build Skills That Last

Over upcoming sessions, we use structured conversations and skill-building tailored to your results—practical tools for your marriage that last beyond counseling.

What is Prepare/Enrich?

Prepare/Enrich is the most widely used premarital assessment in the world. Developed by Dr. David Olson over more than 40 years of research, it's been completed by more than five million couples and is trusted by therapists, counselors, clergy, and wedding officiants in over a hundred countries.

What makes it different from a typical premarital questionnaire: Prepare/Enrich generates a detailed, individualized report based on how each of you answered. The report identifies your couple type, your shared strengths, the areas with the most growth potential, and how each of you handles stress and conflict. The assessment doesn't tell you whether to get married — it gives you a structured way to understand your relationship clearly and decide what to do with that information together.

As certified Prepare/Enrich providers serving couples across California, we're trained to interpret your results, walk you through what they mean, and translate the insights into practical conversations and skills you'll use long after counseling ends. Sessions are delivered entirely online, so you can do the work from wherever you both are in the state.

"Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction."

Questions we hear most often.

  • Not at all. Premarital counseling works well for couples who are dating seriously and considering a future together, as well as couples already engaged or planning a wedding. The earlier you start, the more time you have to actually use what you learn — but it's never too late.

  • You don't need it the way you'd need couples therapy if something were broken. Premarital work is preventative. It's about building skills, surfacing assumptions, and having structured conversations you might not think to have on your own. Most couples are surprised by what comes up — not because something is wrong, but because the assessment asks questions you wouldn't naturally ask each other.

  • Couples therapy is typically for partners experiencing distress, conflict, or disconnection. Premarital counseling is for couples preparing for a long-term partnership, working from a place of strength rather than crisis. The tools overlap, but the focus is different — preparation rather than repair.

  • Most couples complete the work in 6 to 8 sessions. That includes both partners taking the Prepare/Enrich assessment, reviewing your results together, and working through the areas the assessment identifies as growth opportunities. We can also extend the work if you want to go deeper on specific topics.

  • No. Prepare/Enrich is a research-based assessment that works for any couple, regardless of religious or spiritual background. We work with couples of all faiths and no faith at all.

  • Yes. The work is the same: helping you understand each other, surface assumptions, and build the skills your partnership will need. We work with same-sex couples, partners in open or polyamorous relationships, blended families, intercultural couples, and any other configuration that's meaningful to you.

  • We meet over a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You both join from wherever you are — same room or different rooms — as long as you're both physically in California at the time of the session. Sessions are 60 minutes.

  • Yes. Everything we discuss in session is protected by clinical confidentiality laws. There are a few legal exceptions (such as reports of child abuse or imminent danger to self or others) that we'll explain upfront, but those situations are rare. We also use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform, so the technology itself is built for privacy.

  • Premarital counseling is typically self-pay since most insurance plans don't cover it. Self-pay sessions are $125 to $250 per 60-minute session, depending on the therapist and their licensure level.

If your insurance does cover premarital counseling, your copay typically falls between $10 and $65 per session, depending on your plan — we can verify your coverage through the form on our Fees page. The $35 Prepare/Enrich assessments and workbooks are included at no additional cost.

  • Yes. We reserve a limited number of reduced-fee spots for couples with demonstrated financial need. Please reach out before scheduling to discuss availability.
